DANVILLE, Ky. – Coming off of a dominant 8-1 victory last weekend, the Centre women's tennis team (4-3) stepped back on the court Saturday to take on the undefeated Transylvania Pioneers. After going down early in the doubles matches, the Gold & White amounted the comeback and pulled away through the singles matches and won on a 5-4 final score.
Maddy Trinh and
Kayla Harger were the only Colonels to pick up a victory in the doubles matches, winning on a final score of 8-4. The duo collected their fourth win of the series with Saturday's result, all matches from the no. 3 spot of the lineup.
Lainey Hill and
Carlie Mitchell came close to earning Centre's second point of the night in the no. 1 spot of the lineup, but fell in the back-and-forth duel on a final score of 8-7 (4). The no. 2 doubles team was the final of the three series that took place,
Ella Rueff and
Grace Williams falling on a final score of 8-3.
The Colonels earned their victory comeback through the singles category, winning four out of the six matches that commenced. Trinh posted the most dominant score of the night, earning the win as the team's no. 4 on a 6-1, 6-2 final score.
Mamie Sevier wasn't far behind her in her no. 6 series, the senior snagging her third win of the season on a 6-2, 6-3 final score. Williams posted a strong back half to win the no. 5 series against her Pioneer opponent, the freshman earning a 6-4, 6-3 win. Hill garnered the final point of the night for the Gold & White, winning the back-and-forth no. 2 battle after a strong start to conclude her win on a 6-1, 7-6 (4) final mark. Rueff posted a tough duel against her no. 1 opponent, but fell off similar scores 7-5, 7-5. Mitchell posted the final score of the night, losing on a 6-2, 6-3 final score as the team's no. 3.
Centre will face off next against Berea College, hosting them on the Centre Tennis Courts on Friday, March 10. The first doubles series will kick off at 4 p.m. ET.
