SEWANEE, Tenn.- Men's lacrosse traveled to Tennessee for their highly anticipated final game of the 2023 regular season. After a fierce battle for hosting rights of the upcoming conference tournament, the Colonels fended off the previously undefeated Tigers to claim the regular season title.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Tigers found the first goal of the game but moments later, Centre's
Ryan Black single handily gave the Colonels a 3-1 lead. The rookie laid in three successive goals in a two-minute span, possessing a hat-trick within the game's opening five minutes of play. Following, the Colonels added another point when
Christian Underhill connected with
Max Speers. Closing the quarter, Black tallied yet another goals while Speers put in his second, bringing the score to Centre six, Sewanee one.
- Sewanee opened the next period with their second goal of the game. In response,
Will Hubbs tallied his first point and returned Centre's hold to five. The Tigers would add two additional goals by the end of the half while Hubbs, Speers, and Black padded the Colonel's score with additional points. Entering the break, the Colonels held an eight-point advantage over the Tigers.
- Opening the second half, the Tigers fired in two quick goals before the Colonels landed their singular point of the quarter,
Ridr Knowlton setting up Black for his seventh goal of the game. Sewanee closed the third quarter's scoring with a 2-0 run, moving the score to 13-8 entering the final period.
- Knowlton opened the fourth quarter's scoring but the Tigers quickly shrank Centre's hold to three with a trio of unanswered goals. Hubbs found the Colonel's next point during a man-up opportunity just before
Paxton Brown split his defenders to join Centre's score column. Hubbs closed the Colonels' scoring with a final man-up goal, but the Tigers would find two late points and solidify the score at Centre 17, Sewanee 15.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rookie
Ryan Black, the game's overall leading scorer, set a new career high in both points (7) and goals (1). Hubbs was the next Colonel owning a hat-trick, collecting five goals and supplementing with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Speers, having three goals, was the last member of the Gold & White with a hat trick. Knowlton and Brown collected one goal apiece.
- On defense,
Graham Robbins fronted Centre in both ground balls (8) and caused turnovers (3).
- In goal,
Sammy Zickel denied 12 of the Tiger's shot simultaneously conducting the defense to 16-18 clears.
- At the face-off,
Alex Mozingo and
Dylan Croft matched one-another with eight wins each.
- The Colonels went 2-2 in man-up scoring opportunities, the Tigers managing 1-2.
