Colonels cap home schedule with a win over Berry

DANVILLE, Ky. – After taking down Oglethorpe in a definitive victory the day before, the Centre women's tennis team (10-6, 3-2 SAA) continued their win streak with a Sunday win over the Berry Vikings. Their fourth win in a row wouldn't be without a fight though, the Gold & White emerging victorious off a tight 5-3 win.

The Colonels claimed an early lead after the doubles portion of the contest, winning two of the three series that took place in the Seabury Family Tennis Center. Maddy Trinh and Kayla Harger earned their third sweep of the season as the no. 3 team in the lineup, claiming the first point for the Gold & White off a perfect 8-0 score. The freshman duo of Carlie Mitchell and Grace Williams came next, downing their no.2 Berry opponent off a final mark of 8-4. The final series to conclude consisted off Lainey Hill and Ella Rueff, but would eventually fall in favor of the Vikings with an 8-5 final score at the top of the lineup.

The two programs traded punch-for-punch in the singles portion of the match, trading the no. 3 and 4 spots of the lineup to put the team scores of 3-2, Centre. Trinh won her series on a strong score of 6-4, 6-1 at the no. 4 series, Mitchell falling 6-4, 6-2 at the no, 3. The Colonels and Vikings would trade once again in the no. 1 and no. 5 matches on the scoresheet, Williams collecting the no. 5 win off a 6-2, 6-1 final score and Rueff falling in a close battle at the top of the lineup 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. With the team scores set at 4-3, senior Mamie Sevier would slam her sixth singles win of the season to give the Gold & White their tenth team win of the year with her no. 6 singles win, pushing the most dominant score of the day in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Hill's no. 2 series was left unfinished due to Centre clinching the team win.

The women's tennis team now only has road contests left in their 2023 spring schedule, traveling south next weekend to take on Millsaps and Birmingham Southern to cap the regular season. Their first opponent will be the Majors, that series kicking off at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, April 22.
