JACKSON, Miss. – The Centre women's tennis team (11-6, 4-2 SAA) kicked off their final weekend of the regular season on Saturday, taking the road down south to face off against the Millsaps Majors. The Colonels found themselves ahead early and took control of the series, winning on a final score of 7-2.
The Gold & White started the contest as hot as a program can be, sweeping the doubles matches for the first portion of the contest. The Colonels finished their matches in reverse order of their lineup,
Maddy Trinh and
Kayla Harger at the no. 3 series taking down their Majors opponent first on a final score of 8-2. The freshman duo in the no. 2 spot of the order finished right behind their teammates, the pair of
Carlie Mitchell and
Grace Williams pushing a dominant 8-3 victory. The final series to conclude was strung together by
Lainey Hill and
Ella Rueff, the senior squad putting up an 8-4 final score to garner the team's third team point of the day.
The singles matches kicked off just as hot, Centre picking up their fourth team point off Trinh's win in fourth spot of the lineup, 6-1, 6-2. Mitchell secured Centre's 11th team win of the season with her victory at the no. 3 spot of the order, taking down her Millsaps opponent on the final score of 6-4, 6-4. The next series to finish consisted of a 6-4, 6-2 mark, Hill collecting the win as the team's no. 2 singles student-athlete. Harger stayed in the lineup for the Colonels and competed as the team's sixth slot of the lineup, pushing another team point for Centre off her 6-3, 6-2 victory. Rueff had a tight first set to start off her no. 1 match, but fell on a final score of 7-6 (4), 6-1. The final series to wrap up was at the no. 5 spot,
Mamie Sevier entering the lineup for a three-set battle that would fall in favor of Millsaps, (6) 6-7, 6-1, 10-7.
Centre will wrap up the regular season tomorrow, traveling to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Birmingham Southern for their final match of the regular season. That contest will take place on Sunday, April 23 with a start time of 9 a.m. ET.
