MEMPHIS, Tenn.- On Friday evening, Centre women's lacrosse travelled south to face Oglethorpe in the 2023 SAA Quarterfinals. After nearly two full overtime periods, the Colonels fell to the Stormy Petrels by a score of 16-15.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- In the opening minutes, Centre controlled the game's offensive possession.
Ella Treinen initiated the scoring with a free position shot, followed by a crease-side goal from
Grace Aug,
Lily Gahm assisting. In the next possession, Gahm assisted
Haley Rice for Centre's third-unanswered goal, forcing the Stormy Petrels to burn a time out. Out of the break, Oglethorpe landed their first goal but just after, Gahm netted two consecutive goals of her own, handing the Colonels a 5-1 lead. The Stormy Petrels picked up two late points, freezing the first quarter's score at 5-3, Centre favoring.
- Oglethorpe continued their score-run into the second quarter, swiftly taking the lead with three successive goals. The Colonels landed their singular goal of the quarter when Rice connected with
Gracie Garner, subsequently tying the game. A minute later, Oglethorpe placed a rebuttal shot to repossess the lead entering halftime.
- Centre opened the second half's scoring with yet another goal from the Rice-Gahm duo. For much of the quarter, both teams answered one another's goals, but the Colonels would eventually break the pattern. Rice alone netted three consecutive goals, single handedly returning the lead to Centre. Entering the final quarter, the Colonels held a one-point advantage over their opponents.
- Opening the final quarter, both teams continued to trade points. A 3-0 run from the Stormy Petrels eventually broke the cycle but Centre would end up closing the period's scoring. Two late goals from Gahm and Treinen tied the game at even 15s, subsequently taking the game into overtime.
- The first overtime period passed without a goal from either team, extending the game into a second overtime. Two minutes into the following session, the Stormy Petrels managed one final goal, closing the score at Oglethorpe 16, Centre 15.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Rice led the game in goals with six, adding two assists. Gahm and Treinen joined in having a hat-trick, both landing three shots each.
- Treinen collected the game's highest number in both draw controls (8) and ground balls (5).

- The Colonels just edged their opponents out in 50-50 balls, collecting 22 to their 19.
- Centre dominated at the draw, taking 22 to the Petrels' 13.
