JACKSON, Miss. – With one final weekend left in the regular season, the Centre men's tennis team (12-9, 4-2 SAA) played their first of two matches in 48 hours on Saturday afternoon. The teams visited the Millsaps Majors, taking them down in a dominant final score of 7-2 for their sixth-straight team win.
The Colonels put the ball in their side of the court to kick off the match, sweeping Millsaps in quick 3-0 set of doubles.
Jasper Gazzo and
Ashton Whitt kicked off the contest with the largest margin of victory between the three series, picking up Centre's first team point from the no. 3 spot of the lineup in their 8-2 victory. It wouldn't be long before the Gold & White garnered their second point of the day,
Ben Rueff and
Faraz Ghamgosar picking up another win together this season with their 8-3 win in the no. 2 spot of the lineup. The top of the order was controlled by the Bush brothers,
Bo Bush and
Ty Bush battles and back-and-forth duel with their Majors' opponent that ended in a 8-5 win.
The Majors tried to spark a comeback in the singles portion of the match, picking up the first two singles wins at the no. 1 and 3 spots of the lineup. Those two matches contained Ghamgosar (6-3, 6-2) and Whitt (6-2, 6-3), respectively. With a lead now cut down to one point, the Colonels rattled off three-straight singles wins to collect their 12th team win of the spring. Rueff was the first of the three to catch a victory, heading the no. 3 spot of the lineup with his strong 6-1, 6-2 win. Gazzo stuck in the lineup as the Colonels' sixth man in singles, picking up a victory and sealing the team win off his 6-4, 6-4 final score.
Jett Anderson's 6-4, 6-0 win featured a dominant second set to pick up an extra point in the no. 5 spot of the order. The final series to close belonged to
Ty Bush, the no. 2 student-athlete containing a strong start but would be forced to duel in a third set. The freshman would emerge victorious to push the decisive team win over the Majors, winning 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.
With one more contest left in the regular season schedule, the Gold & White will travel out to Alabama for a battle against Birmingham Southern. The contest will take place on Sunday, April 23 with a start time of 9 a.m. ET.
