Colonels beat MSJ 10-6 to cap off regular season

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball wrapped up its regular season on Monday and added another victory to its record-setting total for 2023 as the Colonels defeated the Mount St. Joseph Lions 10-6 to pick up their 26th win of the year.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- Josh Cunningham led off the Centre attack with a base hit, and then Dillon Di Iorio was hit by a pitch to put the first two runners on. Karson Thompson smacked a double into the gap to score the first run of the night. One wild pitch later and Di Iorio crossed the plate. Thompson scored on a Mark Pyburn sacrifice fly to give Centre an early 3-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the third, Di Iorio was hit by another pitch, stole second and ended up on third after an opposite field base hit. Thompson brought in both runners as his fly ball landed just over the left fielder's head for another double. A ground-rule double from Teddy Holloway plated Thompson to put the Colonels on top by six runs.
- The Lions got on the board with two runs in the fourth, and the game stayed at 6-2 until the seventh. The Colonels took advantage of a few MSJ miscues to score three runs on a balk, an error and an RBI groundout by Holloway. With runners on the corners, Centre tacked on another run as Jamie Laframboise and Evan Weyler executed a double steal, with Weyler scoring after Laframboise stole second.
- Centre held off a late Lions rally in the ninth as David Kinsbrunner struck out the last batter with runners on second and third to end the threat.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Thompson was the only Centre player to pick up multiple hits on the day, as he finished with three and also led the Colonels with three RBIs.
- Centre pitchers struck out a dozen MSJ batters, led by Zach Heavern, who fanned four in two innings while earning the win after getting the start.
