Softball falls in seventh-inning thriller to open SAA Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After earning the third seed in the 2023 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Softball Tournament, the Centre softball team (15-20, 10-8 SAA) kicked off the bracket on Friday against the Rhodes Lynx. The game was back-and-forth that showed a lot of promise for the Colonels, but they'd fall to the Lynx in the final inning of the contest on a 4-3 final score.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Gold & White were able to strike first in the contest, Sunnie Woske sliding home on a fielder's choice by Abby Duncan after pinch running in the second inning.
- Rhodes would jump in front of Centre immediately in the top of the third, rattling off three runs for a two-run lead.
- The Colonels would shave off the deficit to just one in the bottom of the third inning, freshman duo Tori Candler claiming second base on an error by the catcher that also included Layne Ogle scoring on the mistake.
- After starting pitcher Lucy Baseheart put the Lynx three-up-three-down in the top of the fourth, the game would stay quiet until Ogle and Candler slapped together back-to-back base hits to tie the game. Ogle would reach first on a single up the middle, Candler knocking her in from first on a beautiful hit to center field.
- Rhodes would take the lead out in the top of the seventh inning, their single scoring a running on third base.
- Centre would find a baserunner of their own on first base, but with two outs the Colonels couldn't close the contest with the score in their favor.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Gold & White's three runs marks the third-straight SAA Tournament game where they've batted that or more in a single game, dating back to last year's tournament run.
- Ogle's two runs marks the second time in her freshman tour that Georgetown, Ky., native has totaled two or more runs in a single game.
- Candler's RBI in the contest marks her 22nd of the season, pacing the team's first-year student athletes.

UP NEXT
The Gold & White will still have a shot in the conference tournament, facing off against seventh-seeded Hendrix on Saturday, April 29th at 3:30 p.m. ET. If Centre emerges on top, they'll bounce right back on the field for a second consecutive game against the loser of second-seeded BSC and sixth-seeded Rhodes.
