Centre falls in SAA semifinal to pod host

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After an excellent bounce-back day that featured a pair of wins against Hendrix and Rhodes, the Centre softball team (17-21, 10-8 SAA) took on the pod host, second-seeded Birmingham-Southern, for a Sunday showdown in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament semifinal. The Colonels needed to win back-to-back games to bounce off the Panthers and advance to the finals next weekend, but their opponent bested them to hand Centre their second loss of the tournament on a 6-0 final score.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Starting pitcher Lucy Baseheart hit her rhythm early, dicing out a three-up-three down set of batters in the top of the first inning that include a swinging strikeout to end the inning.
- After freshman Tori Candler was able to reach first base due to an error by the second basemen, Emily Lammers was able to place her in scoring position to second base on a two-out single.
- After BSC push a leadoff single in the top of the third, Baseheart was able to pitch outs the next three batters with putouts being logged to Candler, Layne Ogle and Abby Duncan.
- Birmingham kicked off their offensive pressure and rattled off six runs from the fourth inning to the seventh, closing out the game and the Gold & White's season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels' pair of wins that they collected during the 2023 tournament marks the most since the 2017 season where Centre took down Sewanee and Birmingham-Southern.
- Ogle ends the season with a hit streak of six games, the Georgetown, Ky., native collecting her hit on Sunday against the Panthers with a single to left field.
- The Gold & White's 17 wins in 2023 marks the highest win total in a single season since 2018, where the team picked up 18. The 2023 team's 10 SAA victories marks the highest double-digit total in head coach Tori Brown's tenure, the mark last being accomplished in 2015.
