Box Score DANVILLE, Ky- On Saturday afternoon, the Colonel's field hockey squad opened their conference play. Traveling north, the Gold & White went up against Southern Athletic Association's (SAA) Concordia University. Having three different scorers, the Colonels swept the Falcons by a score of 5-0, moving to 1-0 in SAA play.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels opened the game's scoring, finding their first of five goals in
Maggie Will with just seconds left in the initial period. Doubling their score before halftime, Centre found a mid-second-quarter goal in
Emily Ritchie with the help of
Peyton Gahm. Entering the third period, the Gold & White held a two-point edge over the Falcons.
- Out of the halftime break, the Colonels continued to control the offensive game, adding three additional goals before regulation's end. Unassisted, Will recorded the singular goal of the third period. Heading into the final quarter, Centre held a comfortable 3-0 lead over Concordia.
- Centre's fourth goal came together when
Alex Shelley repurposed a Falcon's save, putting yet another ball to the back of the opposing cage. With less than a minute to go, Ritchie claimed Centre's fifth and final point during a corner opportunity, finalizing the score at Centre five, Concordia zero.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels held three athletes in the scoring column. Will and Ritchie tied for the game's leading scorer, each having two. Shelly was just behind them with one goal while Gahm led the game in assists (one).
- The Falcons took six shots but Centre more than quadrupled them with 28, 22 of which were on frame.
- In goal,
Carlie McKenry stopped the Falcon's singular shot of the game. Concordia recorded 17 saves.
- Centre had 11 corner opportunities while Concordia had four.
