DANVILLE, Ky. – Defense was the theme of the night for the football season opener between Centre and Hanover. Ultimately some timely mistakes cost the Colonels in a 10-7 defeat.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre took the opening kickoff and methodically marched down the field for a score.
Will McDaniel carried the load for the Colonels with a big gainer on the first snap of the game and punctuated the drive with a touchdown from eight yards out.
- The Panthers stopped Centre on fourth and short on their second drive and then took advantage of a short field, utilizing a reverse to get into the red zone and converting it into a touchdown pass three plays later to tie the score.
- From there, the defenses took over. Sophomore linebacker
Will Zabel picked off a pass to shut down a promising Hanover drive in the second quarter.
Caleb Jones made another interception for the Colonels in the second to give Centre two turnovers in a row.
- On Hanover's last drive, a 49-yard run got the Panthers deep into Centre territory and they converted a field goal at the end of the period to take a 10-7 lead.
- Centre made a nice push into plus territory on their second series of the third quarter as they used tempo and the running of
Will McDaniel to reach the Hanover 7. Unfortunately, the Colonels moved backward from there on a penalty and a bad snap, and the ensuing field goal went wide right to end the promising drive.
- A long punt return by
Tayden Mounivong put Centre inside the Hanover 40 midway through the fourth quarter.
Nick Osterman converted a fourth down on a strike to
Ashton Foos, but the drive ended on the second missed field goal of the night.
- The Colonels had one last try with a little over two minutes, but a first down sack spelled doom as Centre's fourth down attempt was broken up by the Hanover defense.
