DANVILLE, Ky. – After splitting their games in the JR Hoe Invitational last weekend in Louisville, the Centre men's soccer team (2-1) kicked off their first game of the year on Amend Field on Friday night against LaGrange (1-2). The Colonels put on an offensive show in their match of the Bob Allen Nissan Classic while also blanking the Panthers, finishing the day on a 3-0 win.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- LaGrange got the offense moving first with a close offsides call and a shot, but the Gold & White were the first to put a shot to the back of the net in the 11th minute. Freshman
John Palomino netted his first collegiate goal for the Colonels off the assist by sophomore
Landin Grzelewski for the early lead.
- The Colonels kept taking chances at the net, Centre placing four more shots before LaGrange could send a shot back at them.
- It wouldn't take long for the Gold & White to extend their lead,
Taylor Nelson placing the ball perfectly to senior
Matthew Seran for a one-on-one with the goalie, Seran nailing the shot.
- Hope opened the second half with some pressure of their own, senior goalkeeper knocking away a shot on the bottom right side to keep the shutout alive in the 50th minute.
- Palomino found their way into the net for the final time of the night in the game's 54th minute, slamming in a bouncing shot off the LaGrange keeper to push the lead to three, assisted by
AJ Daniels.
- The Panthers looked to come away with a score of their own in the game, a shot on goal in the 80th minute that was eventually saved up top by Camacho.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-
John Palomino's two scores in the match against LaGrange is the first time this season a single student-athlete has made multiple goals in one match, a feat they accomplished once last season by then-junior Seran and then-freshman
Amit Shahar against Millsaps.
- The Gold & White's 15 shots and eight shots on goal both place season-highs in a single game, the Colonels' third game in a row that they've recorded double-digit shots.
- Daniels' assist in the contest marks the first of his career, the midfielder entering his 19th game of his career on Friday.
- Camacho's four saves total a season-high from the Trinidad and Tobago native, his second 90-minute shutout so far in 2023.
