DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre football team began the back half of the 2024 season with a home contest against the Hendrix Warriors. The Colonels defeated the Warriors 35-18 and improved to 5-1 on the year and 3-0 in conference play.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- After forcing a punt on the first drive of the game, the Colonels began their first march to the end zone in a hole from their own 11.
Will McDaniel quickly got Centre out of the bad field position with a 17-yard run.
Jack Gohmann moved the Colonels with short passes and converted a third down with his legs to cross midfield. Gohmann then connected with McDaniel on a 32-yard bomb to put the Colonels on the board first.
- The Warriors crossed the 50 on their second drive of the game, but stalled shortly thereafter and Centre forced a turnover on downs that put the Colonels in great field position.
- Centre wasted little time getting back on the board as Gohmann completed three straight passes, the last of which was a 31-yard strike that hit
Scotty Brown for a touchdown that gave the Colonels a 14-0 lead.
- Late in the second quarter, Centre faced a fourth down on the Hendrix 35 and picked up a first down on a Hendrix penalty. Three plays later, Gohmann dialed his own number and scored from 13 yards out to put Centre on top 21-0.
- Hendrix marched down the field in the final two minutes of the half, reaching the red zone and scoring a touchdown as the clock expired. The extra point was no good and Centre went into the locker room up 21-6 at halftime.
- The Colonels quickly retook the momentum as the second half started, receiving the third quarter kickoff and driving 71 yards in four plays. The biggest gainer came on a 54-yard pass from Gohmann to
Tyler Blythe. Once Centre reached the red zone, Gohmann hit
Blake Busson over the middle for an 11-yard score and the Colonels again went up by three touchdowns at 28-6.
- On the next Hendrix possession, the Colonels forced a three-and-out from the Warriors and got another short field after
Jakei Tarter blocked a Hendrix punt. A pass interference call in the end zone moved the ball to the Hendrix 10, and Gohmann delivered his fourth touchdown of the day, connecting with
Carter Chandler to make it 35-6.
- The Warriors scored on their next two drives as the fourth quarter began, but failed both two-point conversions and Centre still led by three scores at 35-18. Hendrix threatened again on their next drive before
Mario Brewer Jr. picked off a pass at midfield to stop the Warriors in their tracks.
- Hendrix again looked to narrow the gap later in the fourth as they reached the Centre 8. Once again the drive stalled and the Centre defense made a play as
Jamikel James picked off a pass in the end zone to keep the Warriors off the board. The Colonels ran out the clock for the final five minutes to seal the win.
