DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre football team opened conference play against the defending SAA champion Trinity Tigers on Homecoming Saturday at
Andy Frye Stadium. Behind a total team effort, the Colonels got the win by a score of 24-12.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Wearing black jerseys for the first time since 2011, the Colonels received the opening kickoff and
Jack Gohmann had a perfect first series, completing all four of his pass attempts. The biggest one was a 57-yard bomb to
Travis Maufer that set up Centre on the Trinity 6. Two plays later, Gohmann found Maufer again, this time for a four-yard touchdown to give Centre a quick 7-0 lead.
- Trinity took over five minutes off the clock as they drove inside the Centre 30 before settling for a field goal. After a Centre punt, the Tigers opened the second quarter with another long drive that resulted in a field goal and the lead was down to a point at 7-6.
- On the next Centre possession, Gohmann spun out of a sack and dumped it off to
Carter Chandler for a 21-yard completion.
Scotty Brown caught one over the middle for 15.
Tyler Blythe took an inside handoff and worked his way all the way to the Trinity 11. Gohmann then capped off the drive by finding Chandler in the back of the end zone for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead.
- After the next Tigers drive stalled at midfield, Gohmann went to work again, completing four passes, three of them to
Blake Busson, to get the Colonels in field goal range.
Cam Tegge connected on a short field goal in the final minute and Centre took a 17-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
- The third quarter was a battle of field position as the two teams traded punts. The field went Centre's way when
Will Boehm pinned the Tigers at their own 2, and following a short Trinity punt, Centre got the ball back near midfield. A crossing pattern to
Dant Bowling got Centre into the red zone, and as the fourth quarter started, Gohmann rolled to the left and hit Brown in the end zone for a touchdown to put the Colonels up 24-6.
- Trinity quickly responded, taking just over two minutes to finally reach the end zone, but
JJ Jones knocked away the attempted two-point conversion pass to keep it at 24-12.
- The Tigers got the ball again with eight minutes to go and reached the Centre 30 before a holding penalty halted the drive and Centre turned them over on downs.
- Needing touchdowns to get back into the game, the Centre defense allowed the Tigers to get yards, but clamped down after they reached Centre territory, stopping Trinity two more times on fourth down to secure the win.
