Football clinches share of SAA title with Senior Day win over Sewanee

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre football wrapped up an 8-2 regular season and secured a share of the Southern Athletic Association title as they celebrated Senior Day. The Colonels had their best rushing performance of the season in a 35-8 victory over the Sewanee Tigers.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- After the two teams traded punts on the opening series of the game, Centre got the ball at the 20 and began their first march. Will McDaniel covered a large chunk of the drive with a 36-yard run and Jack Gohmann capped it off with a two-yard completion to Jacob Davis for a touchdown.
- On the next Centre drive, Luke Hammons converted a third down with a run to advance past the 50. Gohmann went to work, completing three straight passes, the last one going 30 yards to Blake Busson, who was stripped at the 1 before breaking the plane of the goal line, but an opportunistic Dajuan Wardell fell on the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown to make it 14-0 in favor of the Colonels.
- Centre's first possession of the second period was a quick one. A 32 yard completion to Busson got the Colonels into Rhodes territory. Tyler Blythe then covered the final 47 yards in three carries, scoring from nine yards out to make it a 21-0 Centre lead.
- After forcing another Sewanee punt, Centre again drove with ease towards the end zone. Gohmann hit long passes to Carter Chandler and Travis Maufer for big gains and then McDaniel burst through for a 26-yard touchdown scamper, giving the Colonels a four-score lead.
- In the final minute of the half, the Tigers hit a long pass for a 60-yard score and converted a two-pointer to make it 28-8 at the break.
- The second half belonged to the defenses as both teams traded punts for most of it. Centre forced a turnover early in the third quarter after Mario Brewer Jr. picked off a Sewanee pass.
- The Tigers advanced into Centre territory on their final drive of the third quarter, but Centre snuffed it out on the first play of the fourth period after Evan Elder recovered a fumble.
- Centre's final scoring drive came midway through the fourth quarter. Gohmann completed three passes to Chandler on the drive and McDaniel punctuated it with another long touchdown run, this time scoring from 25 yards out.
