DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's tennis team opened spring play with a Bluegrass matchup with one of the best small college tennis programs in Campbellsville University. The No. 21 ranked Tigers of the NAIA polls took a 9-0 decision over the Colonels in the Seabury Family Tennis Center.
The Gold & White doubles squads combined to win 10 games.
Maddy Trinh and
Carlie Mitchell were the No. 1 double squad for Centre and fell 8-4 to Miru Nonaka and Oriana Espinoza. The doubles duo to win the most games for the Colonels on Saturday was No. 2 pair
Grace Williams and
Kennedy Herring who dropped an 8-6 decision against Andrea Ovejero and Ariadna Perez.
Campbellsville earned wins in all six singles matches but Gold & White had several competitive performances. Trinh fell in the No. 1 spot 7-5, 6-2 to Perez. In the No. 2 singles slot, Mitchell forced a tiebreaker with Mendoza after a 7-5 loss and 6-6 tie. Mendoza won the tiebreaker 7-4.
The final four Colonels won at least won game against the Tigers with two winning multiple. Those multiple game winners were Williams in the No. 3 slot against Nonaka (6-3, 6-2) and Herring in the No. 6 spot versus Ovejero (6-1, 6-3). The No. 4 and 5 singles slots posted the exact same scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
Sophie Maddux fell to Espinoza in the No. 4 match and
Abby Jamison fell to Clara Asprella in the No. 5 competition.
Centre has a quick turnaround as they take on Georgetown College tomorrow. Action from the Seabury Tennis Center starts at 12 p.m.
