Women’s tennis narrowly falls in thriller

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's tennis team kept the spring season rolling with a thrilling match versus Georgetown College on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers won 5-4 in a match that came down to the final singles set.

The Colonels got a strong start thanks to Kennedy Herring and Sophie Maddux. The No. 3 doubles duo made quick work of Madelyn Gill and Hana Dixon with an 8-0 win. Grace Williams and Natalie Black, the No. 2 Centre doubles pair, finished next and notched an 8-3 win for the home team over Emma Hill and Lydia Prince. Carlie Mitchell and Maddy Trinh fell in the No. 1 doubles spot. It was a battle to the end in the 8-5 setback for the top doubles team against Bailee Martin and Samantha Spady.

Singles action started with a singles win for the Colonels as well. Williams defeated Maddy Gill by a tally of 6-1, 6-1 in the battle of No. 3 singles. Georgetown took the No. 1 singles set with a 6-3, 6-1 win for Bailee Martin over Mitchell. The No. 2 singles finished next and it was another Centre win. Trinh took down Sam Spady 6-2, 6-3 to move the Colonel lead to 4-2 with three singles left in action.

The Tigers won both the No. 5 and No. 6 doubles contests. Gigi Gossett was in the No. 5 spot for Centre and forced a third set after falling 6-1 in set one and winning set two 6-2. Unfortunately, she fell 10-3 in the third set to Abby Moss. Skylar Keesee fell in the No. 6 spot 6-0, 6-4 to Anna White.

It was a fight to the finish with the match score tied at 4-4 with just the No. 4 singles still undecided. Herringg fell 4-6 in the first set but put together an impressive 7-0 run of wins in set two after falling behind 6-0. Hill of Georgetown ultimately prevailed in the third set 10-6 and the Tigers won the match 5-4.

The next three matches for the Colonels are at home. Centre hosts Indiana University-Southeast on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. to continue the homestand.
