Explosive finish for softball splits IWU series

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre softball team fell in the first game of two versus Illinois Wesleyan University but came back in a big way to win the second. The Colonels fell 10-2 in the first contest and won game two 5-3.

The Colonels are 3-5 as they enter conference play next weekend.

GAME ONE: IWU 10, Centre 2
- The Titans jumped out to an early lead in the first game after scoring single runs in the first two innings, while keeping Centre at bay.
- Andrea Searcy hit a one-out double in the bottom of the second and then Emily Lammers followed that with single. A wild pitch advanced them each one base. Then a Rylie Bentley ground out scored Searcy to tally the first Colonel run.
- Illinois Wesleyan added two runs in the third inning to go up 4-1, but Centre responded with a homer from Izzy Rushing in the bottom of the third.
- It was bad news for the Colonels as the Titans scattered six runs across the final inning to win 10-2.
- Kaylee Gregory started in the circle and pitched three and 1/3 innings for Centre. She struck out two. Lucy Baseheart pitched the final one and a third inning and struck out one while allowing no earned runs.

GAME TWO: Centre 5, IWU 3
- Illinois Wesleyan, much like the first game, got on the board first and built a multi-run lead of 3-0 at the top of the fifth. The rest of the game played more in favor of the Colonels.
- With two outs on the board, Caroline Unruh hit a single to left field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rushing was next and was walked. Abby Duncan came in to pinch hit and hit a double that scored two runs, making the game 3-2, while Duncan moved to third on an error by the opponent's shortstop.
- The Titans were shut down in the top of the sixth as the three batters went down in order with a swinging strike out, pop out, and a ground out.
- Centre impressed in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Gregory hit a lead off single though the left side to come to first. Then Searcy hit a double that placed runners in scoring position.
- With those runners in scoring position, Lydia Rice went yard. The senior hit a three-RBI home run to give the Colonels a 5-3 lead and the win.
- Baseheart hurled for four and two-thirds innings and struck out one, while allowing three earned runs. Searcy picked up the win with two and a third innings of work where she allowed just two hits and no earned runs.
