Colonels sweep Sunday doubleheader to stay unbeaten

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre baseball team kept its program record season opening win streak going as the Colonels swept a Sunday doubleheader at Gary Wright Field. Centre rallied for a 7-3 victory over Capital before winning a pitching duel against DePauw by a count of 2-0.

Game 1: Centre 7, Capital 3

- The Colonels had to play from behind in the first game of the day as the visiting Comets rallied for three runs in the third and held the Colonels at bay over the next two innings despite Centre getting runners in scoring position.
- With one out in the sixth, Michael Lynch ended up on second after an error and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Evan Weyler was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners and Aaron Lopez brought them in with a double to center field, narrowing the gap to 3-2.
- The rally continued with two outs as a base hit by Conner Jackson scored Lopez to tie the game. Jamie Laframboise kept it going with another single and then Ayden Lohr belted one over the big wall in left field to cap off a six-run inning.
- Centre tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth after Karson Thompson lifted a leadoff homer to put the Colonels on top 7-3.
- Jess Miller picked up the 27th out of the game on a strikeout to improve the Colonels to 7-0 on the year.

Game 2: Centre 2, DePauw 0

- Josh Cunningham led off with a walk and stole his way to third. Ben Prather lifted a sac fly to the warning track to score Cunningham and put Centre on top 1-0.
- Starting pitcher Harrison Cowdrey recorded his first seven outs via strikeout before running into a jam in the third with runners on first and second with one out, but a pretty 4-6-3 twin killing got the Colonels out of the inning unscathed.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Weyler smacked a double off the glove of the outstretched left fielder and eventually scored on a clutch base hit up the middle by Thompson to make it a 2-0 Centre lead.
- Cowdrey cruised through the next three innings before getting out of a bind in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts. Jack Gerber slammed the door on the Tigers with a scoreless final two innings.
