MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Saturday was the start of 2024 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action for the Centre softball team and the Colonels dropped games 5-0 and 3-2 to host Rhodes College.
The Colonels fell to 3-9 and 0-2 in the SAA after the Saturday doubleheader.
GAME ONE: Rhodes 5, Centre 0
- Rhodes took an early lead with an RBI single scoring the first run of the series in the bottom of the second inning.
- Centre's first hit came courtesy of
Rylie Bentley. In the top of the third the senior hit a single. She then stole second, the only stolen base for the visiting team in the game.
- A two-RBI home run in the bottom of the fourth and two more scored runs in the fifth frame moved the lead to 5-0 for the Lynx.
- The Gold & White rallied in the sixth inning as back-to-back singles from
Cheney Floyd and
Izzy Rushing placed two Colonels on base. Unfortunately for Centre, those runners remained stranded.
- One more hit in the top of the seventh came for the Colonels, with
Emily Lammers providing the base hit, but it was not enough to stop the 5-0 loss.
-
Kaylee Gregory got the start in the circle and pitched three complete innings. She struck out one batter and allowed only one earned run.
Lucy Baseheart was the final pitcher of the game for the Gold & White. She struck out two over three innings of work.
GAME TWO: Rhodes 3, Centre 2
- Centre had a spark to start the second game as the contest started with a leadoff single for Rushing. Floyd followed that with a single of her own and then both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Following a pop out, Rushing scored on a ground out from Lammers.
- The next two half innings saw just three batters each from each team in a defensive battle.
- Rhodes tallied a tying run in the bottom of the second after back-to-back singles, with a stolen base in between, sent a runner across home.
- The Lynx took the lead in the third frame and held it until the top of the sixth.
- An
Andrea Searcy home run tied the game 2-2 and it looked like the game could have been headed for extra innings.
- Rhodes took advantage of a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh, with two runners in scoring position, to end the game with a 3-2 walk-off win.
- Searcy hurled the entire contest for the Colonels. She struck out four and allowed just one earned run.
