Colonels outlast Vikings in conference opener

DANVILLE, Ky.- The Colonels returned to South Turf to host their first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opponent of the season. After trailing in the opening quarter, women's lacrosse rallied to defeat Berry and improve to a 1-0 mark in the league. 

HIGHLIGHTS
 - The Viking's opened the scoring, taking an early lead with a trio of unanswered goals. Isa Stumpf put Centre on the board with a pair of unbroken scores, the second being a woman-down goal. Berry claimed four additional goals that surrounded Centre's third and final goal of the period. Heading into quarter two, Centre trailed 7-3.
- The Colonels stormed into the next period, swiftly cutting the deficit to one with three successive goals from Addie Lewis, Haley Rice, and Lily Gahm. The Vikings hit back with a mid-quarter goal but wouldn't place another before halftime. Adding two later points from Emma Botts and Gahm, the score showed a tie at 8-8 entering the break.
- Berry regained the lead in the initial possession of the second half, netting a goal seconds in. Just after, Ella Treinen and Botts both found the back of the cage, handing Centre their first lead of the contest. Each team notched two additional goals before period's end, halting the score at Centre 12, Berry 11 heading into the final frame. 
- Opening the fourth quarter, the Colonels separated themselves with three quick goals that forced the Vikings to burn a time-out to regroup. Proving successful, Berry rattled off three successive goals to bring them within one point. With neither team claiming a goal in the last two minutes, the final score was set at Centre 15, Berry 14.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gahm led the field in goals with five. Rice, Botts, Treinen, and Stumpf followed with two apiece while Addie Lewis and Gracie Garner each scored one.
- Gahm fronted the game in ground balls with eight.
- Rice tied for the game's leader in caused turnovers with three. 
- The Colonels favored in ground balls, scooping 34 to Berry's 23.
- In goal, Mary Haley denied eight of the Vikings' 22 shots on goal.
