Centre women surpass Sewanee on Senior Day

DANVILLE, Ky.- On Saturday morning, the Centre women's lacrosse team hosted Southern Athletic Association's (SAA) Sewanee for their 2024 Senior Celebration. After a close, 60-minute battle, the Colonels downed the Tigers 21-20, securing the second seed heading into the SAA Tournament.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Tigers opened the scoring early, tallying the first goal a minute in. In the next possession, senior Emma Botts evened the score before Sewanee trailed away with three unanswered goals. Minutes later, the Colonels found equal success, matching with three unbroken goals in Ella Treinen (man-up), Mary Margaret Bryant, and Haley Rice. By the end of the frame, Centre outscored the Tigers 4-3, halting the score at 7-6, the Colonels favoring. 
- Sewanee stormed into the next quarter, opening with three successive goals. Centre's Rice and Botts teamed up to tie it back up before rookie Ellie Macdonald gave the Colonels the lead. Closing the half, the Gold & White put together a late rally with notable goals in Treinen, Botts, and Rice. Entering the break, Centre held a three-point edge. 
- Out of halftime, the game remained close, Sewanee tying it back up three separate times. With one additional goal from Gracie Garner, Centre continued to lead by one entering the final frame. 
- The Tigers took the one-point lead with back-to-back goals. With six minutes to go, Treinen and Rice tallied three successively, putting the Colonels two ahead. Sewanee closed the game's scoring but when time ran out, the Colonels bettered their SAA opponent 21-20.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Bott and Rice tied for the game's leader in goals with six each.
- In goal, Mary Haley and Gracey Falk split time. Together the two collected seven saves.
- Rice dominated on the face-off with 16 wins. 
- Centre favored in shots, ground balls, and draw controls.

Women's lacrosse will remain in Danville for the Quarterfinals of the SAA Women's Lacrosse Conference tournament.
