DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre Athletics is saddened to report the passing of former football coach Herb McGuire, who died on Oct. 21 at the age of 90.
A 1957 Centre graduate, McGuire lettered in golf, football, and track during his time at the college, playing on the undefeated 1955 Centre football team. He then entered the coaching world and coached various sports at Centre for over 40 years. McGuire coached the Centre football team from 1972 to 1979 and won the Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in 1972. 34 of McGuire's Centre football players earned All-Conference honors. The press box at Andy Frye Stadium is named in his honor.
In addition to his tenure as head football coach, McGuire coached baseball, track, cross country, and golf at Centre, and helped start the cross country and women's golf programs. He also started the Praying Colonels Invitational, the fundraising golf tournament for Centre's athletic department. For all of his contributions, Herb McGuire took his rightful place in the Centre Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
In 2014, McGuire was inducted into the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame. At the time of his induction, McGuire served on the Kentucky Golf Association Board of Directors for 47 years and remains active. He served two terms as KGA President and a term as KGA-PGA President and also served as KGA Tournament Committee Chair, KGA Section 7 Director and as a Rules Official. McGuire was a J.W. Janes Award winner, Kentucky PGA President's Award winner, KHSAA Outstanding Golf Official Award winner and was inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame for service in promoting athletics in the state of Kentucky. Also an excellent player, competing in numerous state amateur, club, high school and senior events, McGuire won the 1990 Kentucky Senior Amateur title.
