DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre baseball team began its 2025 season with a doubleheader against the Fighting Scots of Wooster. The Colonels came away with a split in the doubleheader, winning the first game 2-1 before falling 3-1 in the night cap.
Game 1: Centre 2, Wooster 1
- Hits were hard to come by for both teams in the opening innings. 2024 SAA Tournament MVP
Harrison Cowdrey got the start for Centre and induced a pair of double plays before leaving in the fifth with the score tied at 0-0.
- In the bottom of the fifth,
Forrest Day got on with a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored after
Ayden Lohr smacked a double over the left fielder's head.
Ben Prather then drove in Lohr with a base hit up the middle to give Centre a 2-0 lead.
- The Scots got a run back in the eighth after two walks and an error. Another walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, but
Zach Heavern came through with a huge strikeout to keep it at 2-1.
-
Aidan Christmas worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.
Game 2: Wooster 3, Centre 1
- The second game played out in a similar fashion to start as game 1, as day turned to night and the already cold day got colder. Neither team cracked the scoreboard until the fifth when Wooster scored a pair of runs on an RBI groundout and an error.
- The Scots added another run in the sixth to make it 3-0, but Centre immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning as
Matthew Maggard connected on a line drive off the pitcher's glove and pinch runner
Carson Mire eventually scored after a sac fly by Day to make it 3-1.
- Centre looked to have a good chance at more runs in the eighth as they loaded the bases with two outs, but a throw from third arrived just in time to stop the rally and the last serious threat for the Colonels.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
- Centre pitchers struck out 23 batters across the doubleheader. Cowdrey got the win in game 1 allowing three hits and no runs while striking out seven in five innings. In game 2,
TJ Schira threw three innings of no-hit relief with six punchouts.
- Prather went 5-8 at the plate with one RBI across the two games and also struck out four in three innings as the game 2 starter.
