JACKSON, Miss.- Centre women's basketball traveled to Mississippi to take on Sewanee in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Semifinals. Although trailing after the initial quarter, the Colonels held on to win by a score of 82-75, advancing to the SAA Championship game.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Besides a signature hook shot from
Lilly Reid, the opening five minutes belonged to the Tigers. Out of the quarter's media timeout,
Ka'Niah Edelen and Reid teamed up to bring Centre within one, but Sewanee answered. The Tigers outscored the Colonels 11-4 for the remainder of the frame, making the first period the only period Sewanee would favor offensively.
- Edelen opened the frame with a long ball to bring the Colonels within five. After trading miniature runs throughout the period,
Ryleigh Campbell struck hot in the final three minutes, netting two successively to tie the game at 26-26. With both teams in foul trouble, the final two minutes of the half came at the line where Sewanee took the slight 34-30 lead.
- Out of the break, Reid and Campbell continued the Colonels' rally. Three minutes in,
Bailey Rucker gave Centre their first lead at the charity stripe.
Trinity Armour,
Anna Thomas, and Reid kept the offensive momentum going through the period and by the end of the quarter, the Colonels held a three-point lead.
- The opening four minutes of the final frame saw just three free-throws, Reid and Rucker going 3-4 collectively. For the remainder of the contest, anytime the Tigers came within a basket, the Colonels answered to maintain control. In the final two minutes, Centre netted ten at the line. That plus an
Arin Nipp lay-up set the final score at Centre 82, Sewanee 75.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre held four athletes in double figure points. Reid led with 23, followed by Rucker with 17. Campbell and Edelen netted 13 each.
- Reid led the game in both steals and assists after taking three and helping six.
- Nipp led the Colonels off the glass with seven rebounds.
- Centre dominated in bench points 36-6 while favoring in points from turnovers (13-10), second chance points (10-6), and fast break points (10-4).
