DANVILLE, Ky. – No. 15 Centre baseball improved to 17-5 on the year as they took a hard-fought series opener over the LaGrange Panthers by a score of 5-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- For five innings, the game belonged to the starting pitchers as
Harrison Cowdrey got the start for the Colonels and pitched his way out of a few jams to keep the game scoreless. Both teams' defenses played well as neither team could get on the board in the first five frames.
- In the top of the sixth, the Panthers dented the scoreboard first as they took a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single.
- With two outs in the bottom of the inning,
Aaron Lopez walked. The wind began to blow out of the ballpark and so did the baseball as
Baylor Woodall lifted a two-run homer over the left field fence to give Centre a 2-1 lead. Centre took advantage of the friendly wind as
Graham Johnson made it back to back bombs for the Colonels with a solo shot for a 3-1 advantage.
- In the seventh,
Zach Heavern came on in relief of Cowdrey with two men on and got out of a bases loaded jam. When the field turned, Centre's next batter was
Ben Prather, and he crushed a fly ball to left field for another solo homer. Centre's last run came after a
Chase Austin double and a two-base error to make it 5-1.
- Heavern settled in over the next two innings and did not allow a run to pick up the save.
