Centre men top D3 field at Berry Field Day

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Centre men's track & field team traveled to Berry College to compete in the three-day Berry Field Day and Multis against a stacked field of teams representing all divisions. The Colonels finished third overall, but first among the Division III teams in the field.
 
Centre scored 78 points to take third place, five points behind Life. Montevallo got the win with 150 points, with Emory in fourth and Berry in fifth.
 
MULTIS
 
In the decathlon, All-American Nick Whitlow picked up where he left off in the NCAA Indoor Heptathlon. Whitlow finished either first or second in eight of the ten events on the way to 6,541 points to win the decathlon and set a new Centre program record by nearly 300 points, breaking the record Thomas Burkey had held since 2019.
 
FRIDAY
 
In the 400m hurdles, Justin Lewis picked up a point for the Colonels as he posted an eighth place finish with a time of 57.95.
 
Senior Philippe N'Dia posted the top Division III mark in the triple jump as he finished in fourth place with a mark of 43-8 (13.31m). Jacob Rogers took seventh place in the triple jump with a mark of 42-6.25 (12.96m).
 
SATURDAY
 
After finishing eighth in the 400m hurdles the previous day, Lewis came back with a third place finish in the 110m hurdles, clocking in at 15.25.
 
Fresh off a pair of personal best times last week at the Centre home invite, reigning SAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week Jackson Heim placed third in the 400m with a time of 49.41.
 
In the 800m, Chase Sweger recorded a personal best time as he crossed the finish line in 1:04.76 to finish seventh.
 
Freshman Luke Cole had another strong performance in the javelin as he threw 177-1 (53.98m) to finish fourth, first among D3 throwers. Erik Backstrom threw an even 161 feet (49.08m) to finish seventh.
 
In the shot put it was reigning SAA Men's Field Athlete of the Week David Harless who led the way as he finished fourth overall with a mark of 48-6.75 (14.80m) to lead the D3 field
 
The Colonels had two of the top three finishers in the pole vault as Alex Hibbens cleared 13-2.25 (4.02m) to finish in second place, followed by Eden Silver in third with a clear of 12-8.25 (3.87m).
 
In the long jump, Isaac Johnson took third place with a mark of 20-11.5 (6.39m), followed closely by Carter Chandler in fifth with a mark of 20-7.25 (6.26m).
 
Johnson paced the Colonels again in the high jump as he cleared 6-1.25 (1.86m) to finish in fourth place.
 
The final throwing event of the day was the discus and Harless again paced the Colonels with a throw of 145-1 (44.21m) for his second fourth place finish of the meet.
 
NEXT UP
 
The Colonels will host the Centre Twilight on Apr. 18 in their final meet before the conference finals the following week.
