Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Jason Grefer, Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and External Relations

Martin's double-OT heroics lift Colonels past Wooster

Field Hockey kicked off the 2025 season with a trip north to take on Wooster. Sixty minutes was not enough. Seventy was not either. It took until the 77th minute for Centre to grab the lone goal on the day and take the win.

Centre and Wooster traded possession for much of the opening quarter with limited shot chances. Wooster had the first go in the 2nd minute but the chance sailed wide of target. Colonel goalie, MJ Surtin, tallied her first save of the day at the 3:34 mark of the 1st. Centre's first chances came in the 6th minute was Taylor Fuqua and Claire Martin each had shots blocked away. The first shot on goal for the Colonels came from Olivia Vonderheide just past the midway point of the quarter.

In the 2nd, Wooster controlled the ball and scoring chances early. Centre had to fend off 7 shots in the first 8:28 of the quarter. MJ Surtin stopped 2 shots with the remaining going wide or blocked. The Colonel defense tightened up from there, not allowing another shot attempt for the rest of the half. Emily Ritchie registered Centre's only shot on goal in the 2nd with less than 5 minutes to play as the game went to the half scoreless.

Centre turned up the attack in the 3rd. Olivia Vonderheide had the first chance just 2:25 in. Claire Martin threatened the Wooster goal from there. Her first shot was saved at the 6:31 mark of the 3rd. She would then register 3 shots in 8 seconds soon after but would be turned away each chance as the Colonels could not find the angle to put the ball in the net. Wooster fended off the attack to send the game to the 4th. The Colonels put 4 more shots on the Wooster net but still could not get one home as the game headed to overtime.

The golden goal finally came just past midway in double overtime. Just over 6 minutes in, Claire Martin broke free towards the net, received a perfect lead pass from Taylor Fuqua, and then won the 1-on-1 with Wooster's goalie to end the marathon opener and give Centre the 1-0 win.

The Colonels had a number of chances throughout the game to light up the scoreboard as they logged 14 shots on goal. Martin accounted for half the tries in the game with the final being the tally. The defense allowed just 5 shots in front of 3 Centre goalies on the day. MJ Surtin logged 30 minutes and 3 saves. Addie Sheridan played the 3rd quarter but did not need to record a save. Eliza Hensley came on to start the 4th and stayed in goal to the end, tallying 2 stops.

Centre stays in Ohio for a Sunday afternoon matchup at Wittenberg. The action gets going at Noon.
