DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre Women's Soccer continues to pace the top of the SAA table after a 1-0 win over Sewanee in Sunday's home finale against Sewanee.
The early portion of the match saw Sewanee controlling the ball and field positioning with much of the action in the Centre final third.
Madeline Redmon made her first save of the game in the 7th minute before Centre's defense began to settle in. The Tigers nearly had a tally in the 28th minute as a curling shot drilled the right post. The Colonel D was able to clear the threat from the goal box. Centre's moment soon followed in the 33rd minute.
Mary Martin Hampton navigated the ball into the Sewanee penalty area and was taken down from behind. The referee immediately pointed to the PK spot, setting the stage for
Ella Mann. After setting the ball, Mann calmly delivered a strike to the right side of the net, beating the Sewanee keeper to put the Colonels on the board.
Katie O'Neill had a late go in the half, but the shot was saved, leaving Centre with a 1-0 lead at the break.
Half number two saw fewer opportunities on both sides as the ball primarily moved around in the midfield. Centre had 3 shot attempts in the first 20 minutes of the half with none on target, while Sewanee only had 1. Redmon made a clutch save in the 67th minute to keep the Tigers off the board. Each team had a single shot on goal in the final 10 minutes but neither were true threats as Centre closed out the win to move to 5-0-1 in the league and temporarily take a 6-point lead over Berry and Trinity.
The Colonels take their game on the road this weekend to close out the regular season. The next matchup sees Centre travel to Rhodes on Friday starting at 2:00pm ET.
