MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Centre football picked up its third consecutive win in conference play and its first win on the road this season, getting off to a great start and defeating the 19th ranked Berry Vikings by a score of 28-14.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- After trading punts on the first two possessions of the game, Centre marched into Berry territory after a 48-yard run from
Tyler Blythe, his longest of the season. The drive stalled and Centre missed a field goal, but the defense forced another three and out, with the punt pinning the Colonels on their own 7.
- Two-time SAA Offensive Player of the Week
Mason Trimble used the intermediate passing game to advance his troops down the field as
Dant Bowling,
Clint Sansbury and
Jakei Tarter all caught passes for first downs to cross midfield. Trimble converted a third down using his legs and then connected with
Caden Barker to get to the Berry 5. On third and goal, Trimble called his own number and ran it in from six yards out to give Centre the early 6-0 lead after capping off the six-minute, 13-play drive.
- A sack by
Brenden Anthony on the first play of the second quarter forced another Berry punt and the Centre special teams unit made a huge play as
Brody Aylor blocked the kick, scooped up the loose ball at the 2 and got to the end zone, giving the Colonels a 13-0 lead.
- Centre's defense forced the Vikings to go three and out again on the next series and Trimble ran three times for 27 yards and connected with Barker on a 21-yard pass to reach the red zone. From there, Trimble lofted one to
Ant Barbee, who brought it in for an 18-yard touchdown and a commanding 20-0 lead for the Colonels.
- Another big play for the defense came on the next drive as
Matthew Kern picked off a Berry pass to set the offense up inside the 20, but a sack on third down forced a long field goal attempt, which was no good.
- Near the end of the half, Berry converted a 4th and 19 to reach the Centre 3, but two plays later,
Will Delorimier picked off a pass attempt in the end zone on the last play of the quarter and the Colonels kept their 20-0 lead going into the break.
- On the first drive of the third period, Berry crossed midfield after a pair of first down passes and face a short yardage situation on fourth down, but Centre held firm as the defense stuffed the quarterback rush for no gain.
- Centre held the ball for over six minutes on their next drive, but the march eventually stalled and ended with a failed pass attempt on fourth down. Berry quickly took advantage as the Vikings uncorked a 60-yard run to reach the Centre 2-yard line and punched it in two plays later for their first score of the day to make it 20-7.
- The Colonels were forced to punt on the next drive as the fourth quarter began and Berry looked to keep the momentum going with a 50-yard pass completion to land just outside the red zone. The play of the game came on fourth down as
Mario Brewer Jr. picked off a pass in the end zone and ran it back 100 yards to deliver the dagger. Trimble then connected with Barker on a two-point conversion to make it 28-7.
