ATLANTA, Ga. - Senior
Madeleine League has been waiting for a day like today to make her impact on the pitch. When her number was called, she more than delivered with 2 goals off the bench as Centre cruised by Oglethorpe, 4-0, to remain unbeaten in the SAA.
Centre gained an early advantage as an Oglethorpe player was issued a straight red card in the 13th minute, leaving the Stormy Petrels with only 10 on the pitch the rest of the day. The Colonels needed just 49 seconds to take advantage as
Zara McCarthy took a feed from
Claire Mullen and slotted the ball home. Her 4th straight game with a goal gave the Colonels the lead. In the 26th minute, Centre made four changes, including
Madeleine League. The senior needed less than 10 minutes to make her impact. In the 36th minute, League found an opportunity and did not miss. Her first goal of the year doubled the Colonel lead to 2-0 at halftime.
League started the second half and would extend the Centre lead. In the 55th minute,
Claire Cavacini fired a shot off the post, but League was right there to tuck the ball home. League's brace essentially sealed the win for the Colonels. Cavacini had another go in the 67th minute but was denied by the woodwork once again. The Colonels kept pressing and were rewarded in the 77th minute.
Lily Burchett and
Brooke Beasley set up
Hannah Hogg in the box for Centre's 4th goal of the day and closed out a dominating performance.
Centre outshot Oglethorpe, 13-3, on the day, with all 4 shots on target finding the net. Centre also earned 8 corners to just 3 for the Stormy Petrels.
The Colonels return home next Friday looking for a 3-0 start in the SAA as Southwestern comes to Danville. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm.
