JACKSON, Miss. - The Centre football team had its game against the Millsaps Majors moved up to a Friday night kickoff due to the threat of Hurricane Isaias in Mississippi on Saturday. Despite a good start, the Colonels were outscored 21-0 in the fourth quarter and lost by a score of 28-13.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels could not have asked for a better start to the game as on the second play from scrimmage, quarterback
Mason Trimble raced 76 yards to paydirt and the fastest Centre touchdown to open a game in four seasons. A botched extra point attempt kept the score at 6-0.
- After trading punts, the Majors embarked on a long drive that ended up inside Centre's 10, but the Colonels caught a break when Millsaps missed a short field goal and the lead stayed at six points.
- On the first Millsaps drive of the second quarter, the Majors marched down the field and faced a fourth down just short of the Centre red zone. Millsaps got the first down on the play, but
Ethan Arnold jammed the ball loose and
Nate Barnhardt recovered the fumble to give the Colonels a key turnover.
- Centre took advantage of the turnover and put together their longest drive of the game, taking nearly seven minutes off the clock with a good mix of run and pass plays.
Kyle Davis converted a fourth down late in the drive and on third down from the Millsaps 5, Davis got the call again and punched it into the end zone to give Centre a 13-0 lead.
- Millsaps got the ball to start the second half and with the Majors near midfield, they launched a bomb that resulted in a 48-yard touchdown to get the home team on the board, making it a 13-7 game.
-
Clint Sansbury made a 41-yard dash up the middle for his longest gain of the season to get Centre into the red zone on their next drive, but on third down, a sack and fumble gave the ball back to the Majors.
- With Millsaps in Centre territory to start the fourth quarter, a long quarterback run gave the Majors goal to go and they converted two plays later for a go-ahead touchdown to make it 14-13.
- A holding penalty negated a 15-yard gain for Centre on third and short, eventually forcing a punt. A short completion on the next play led to a 62-yard gain for Millsaps for their longest play of the game. The Majors would cap off the drive with a short touchdown run to go up 21-13. Millsaps would put the game away with a touchdown on their next drive.
