Colonels earn doubleheader sweep against Wabash

DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre baseball improved to 9-2 on the year after sweeping a doubleheader against the Wabash Little Giants. After walking off for an 8-7 victory in the first game, the Colonels won 12-6 in the nightcap to finish off the sweep.

Game 1: Centre 8, Wabash 7

- With a fierce wind blowing out of the park, Centre got the scoring started in the second after Aaron Lopez singled and Evan Rygalski belted one over the left field fence for a quick 2-0 lead.
- Wabash got a run back in the top of the third before the Colonels went on the offensive in the bottom of the inning. Forrest Day led off with a deep fly ball that the wind carried over the fence for a solo shot and a 3-1 lead. Following a Chase Austin walk, Ayden Lohr nearly hit one off the scoreboard for Centre's third homer of the day, putting the Colonels up 5-1.
- The Wabash bats woke up in the sixth, tying the game as they scored four runs on three hits, three walks and an error. One inning later Wabash went on top after a two-run home run.
- Trailing 7-5 with one out in the ninth, Austin hit a deep fly ball that the wind grabbed and put out of the center fielder's reach for a double. Lohr followed with a massive home run over the left field fence to tie the game.
- Centre kept the momentum going as Evan Weyler connected on a base hit and eventually wound up on third after a pickoff throw went awry. This brought up Aaron Lopez, who lifted a long fly ball that resulted in a sacrifice fly, driving in Weyler for the winning run.

Game 2: Centre 12, Wabash 6

- Following a three-hour weather delay, Wabash cracked the scoreboard first in the opening inning, but Centre quickly responded. Three straight singles by Lohr, Wehler and Lopez tied the game at 1-1. After Rygalski walked to load the bases, a Wabash error resulted in all three runners scoring to give Centre a 4-1 lead.
- The Giants cut into the Centre lead with a pair of unearned runs in the second to make it 4-3.
- In the third, Graham Johnson led off with a double into the gap. An infield single from Jonah Porter put runners on the corners and Baylor Woodall's sacrifice but scored Johnson to make it a 5-3 game. Centre added to the lead following a double from JT Weisberg and a single from Austin. The Colonels then capped off the crooked number inning as Lopez worked a bases loaded walk for another RBI and an 8-3 lead.
- Wabash made a rally in the fourth with two runs on three hits and two walks, but Tommy Severson came on in relief and got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the damage to a minimum and leave the Colonels on top by three at 8-5.
- Centre quickly put runners on second and third in the fifth as Weisberg led off with a triple and Austin walked and stole second. A sacrifice fly by Weyler made it 9-5 and Lopez followed with a shot up the middle for another RBI to make it 10-5.
- In the eighth, Centre added to the lead on a sac fly from Weisberg and an RBI triple from Lohr to double up Wabash again at 12-6. Severson finished his long relief outing with a scoreless ninth to finish off the Saturday night sweep.
