Records fall for men's track in regular season finale

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Centre men's track & field team had one final meet before the conference championships as they hosted the Centre Twilight. The event was not scored, but two school records fell by the wayside, including the oldest one in the entire record book.

Senior Reeve VanDemark, who set the school record in the mile during indoor season, broke Chris Maher's record in the men's 800m that had stood since 1980 as posted a time of 1:55.43 to finish second overall. Carter Russell also surpassed Maher's 1980 time as he finished third in 1:55.68.

In the 200m, Brayden Carman finished sixth overall with a time of 22.34, followed by Stephen Jones in eighth.

The men's 1500m had Centre runners finish in two of the top four spots as Liam Black took second with a time of 4:02.79, with Houston Brooks finishing in fourth place.

In the 110m hurdles, Julian Veliquette paced the Colonels with a second place time of 14.88, followed immediately by Justin Lewis 0.12 seconds later. Lewis got the win for the Colonels in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.65.

Moving to the jumping events, Michael Smith took second place in the high jump after clearing 1.95m (6-4.75), with Isaac Johnson taking fourth place. Jacob Rogers led the Centre effort in the triple jump as he placed sixth overall with a mark of 12.41m (40-8.75).

Sophomore David Harless had a huge afternoon in the throwing events as he posted marks of 177-2 (54.00m) in the hammer, 164-4 (50.10m) in the discus and  51-7.25 (15.73m) in the shot put. Harless got wins in the discus and shot put and broke his school record in the hammer for the second week in a row, moving 11 spots up the national rankings. In the javelin, Luke Cole got the win with a throw of 170-1 (51.85m).

The next meet for Centre track & field will be the SAA Championships next weekend at Berry.
