Danville, Ky. - Centre picked up its third draw of the young season with a 1-1 result against Denison on Friday night at Amend Field.
The first half was mainly played between the 18-yard boxes and neither side was able to sustain a consistent advance. The first shot of the contest did not occur until the 16th minute, high and wide from Denison. Centre's attack mustered no shots in the half. The only one from Denison was in the 44th minute, but it was right at Centre's
Madeline Redmon as the game stayed quiet at 0-0 going to halftime.
Centre finally got a chance on goal with solid, tactical advancement early in the half.
Aida Bell had the first go in the 53rd minute but was turned away. Just over a minute later, Redmon had to make a save on the other end to keep the game scoreless. Denison nearly had the go-ahead tally off a corner kick in the 64th minute. A ball into the box was headed over Redmon but off the crossbar and eventually cleared away. While Centre took a breath for the moment, Denison found open space in the 70th minute and took advantage. A long, through ball got the Big Red behind the Centre back line. The 1v1 situation went Denison's way as a shot to the upper left corner beat Redmon to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead.
Centre did not hang their heads. In fact, the Colonels turned the energy up and would be rewarded. A long run down the right resulted in a deflected ball into the box in the 76th minute.
Grace Plummer found it on her foot and tucked it home to equalize the proceedings at 1-all. The Colonels nearly had the winner towards the end.
Avery Buser put together a brilliant run down the right side and fired a shot from an angle. The ball easily beat the Denison keeper but clanged off the opposite post and away. The final threat was cleared away as the teams settled for the draw.
Centre now turns its focus to Senior Day on Sunday. The nine seniors will be honored before kickoff against Roanoke, which starts at noon.
