SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In a clash between ranked teams, no. 14 Centre volleyball and no. 5 Trinity pushed each other to the limit in a marathon five-set contest. The host Tigers handed the Colonels their first loss of the season after winning in extra points in the fifth set.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- A quick 5-0 burst gave Centre a lead in the first set that the Colonels never lost. Centre continued to take advantage of Trinity miscues as they extended their lead all the way to the end, winning 25-14.
- In the second set, Centre got off to another quick start, scoring six of the first seven points. Trinity rallied to cut the deficit to a point, but the Colonels fired back with five straight, capped off by two straight kills from
Abby Swartz. The Colonels scored the final three points of the set to win 25-17.
- The third set saw both teams trade the lead back and forth from beginning to end. The Colonels trailed 20-15 before rallying with an 8-2 spurt to take the lead at 23-22 on an ace from
Emersyn Pannell. The Tigers rebounded with three straight points to stay alive with a 25-23 win.
- It was more of the same in the fourth set as Centre and Trinity traded runs and the lead. With the score tied at 16-16, Trinity gradually pulled away over the final few points to push the match to the limit with a 25-21 win.
- In the deciding fifth set, Trinity grabbed a 10-7 lead before Centre made a huge rally with five straight points, with Swartz and
Kendra Christopher each recording a pair of kills in the run. Another kill from Christopher made it 13-12 in favor of Centre before Trinity scored the next two to force match point. Centre fought off the first match point, but as the set reached extra points, Trinity scored the next two to win 16-14.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Christopher led the Colonels with 16 kills on the afternoon, followed by
Elise Grundy with 14,
Syd Bietz with 13 and Swartz with ten. Grundy and Swartz both hit .400 or higher.

Elle B Smith finished with 47 assists, one shy of Trinity's team total. She also finished with a game high five aces.

Campbell Miles led all players with 20 digs in the game, with Bietz and Smith each finishing in double figures.
