Centre volleyball sweeps home doubleheader

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre volleyball team returned to action on Saturday as they hosted both Millsaps and Kentucky Christian in doubleheader action. After sweeping Millsaps, the Colonels came from behind to defeat KCU in four sets.

HIGHLIGHTS

- Against Millsaps, Centre gradually pulled away late in the opening set after falling behind early. Once Centre grabbed a 13-12 lead, they held it for the remainder of the set, winning 25-22 as Perrin Long put away the final kill.

- The Colonels scored the first seven points of the second set and led for the duration, but Millsaps rallied once faced with set point, scoring five straight to extend the set at 24-24. A kill by Long and an ace by Peyton Vacala gave the Colonels the dramatic 27-25 victory.

- Centre battled back from a five-point deficit in the third set, scoring seven consecutive points to turn a close set into a ten-point lead as Bailey Vernon scored the final kill on the 25-16 win and the match.

- Centre dropped the opening set to Kentucky Christian 25-19 and trailed 17-11 in the second set before charging back with six straight points to tie the score. With the set knotted at 20-20, Centre scored the next five points as Savanna Roper put home the last kill on a 25-20 Colonels victory.

- The Colonels dominated the third set, using runs of 7-0 and 5-0 to put away the Knights 25-10 as Lizzie Royster scored the final kill on an emphatic set victory.

- In the fourth set, Centre once again grabbed the large lead early, going up by as many as nine points at 18-9 before winning 25-21 as Roper put away the last two kills to seal the match for the Colonels.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

- Long finished with a game high nine kills against the Majors.

- Kylie Cochran had 27 assists against Millsaps, finishing with more helpers than the Majors team.

- Vacala led Centre against Millsaps with 16 digs, with Savannah Guenther chipping in ten digs.

- Roper led the way with 13 kills against KCU, followed by Long with 11 and Vernon with ten.

- Cochran once again recorded more assists than the opposing team, this time finishing with 41 against KCU.

- Vacala and Guenther paced the Colonels in digs against the Knights, with Vacala finishing with 22 and Guenther adding 11.

NEXT UP

The Colonels will wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Thursday as they host the Sewanee Tigers at 5:30 PM.
