DANVILLE, KY. –Centre field hockey captured the Southern Athletic Association regular season title Saturday, defeating visiting Sewanee, 3-1, on Senior Day at South Turf Field.
A late goal from
Olivia Carter helped break a 1-1 tie against a pesky Tiger side, moving the Colonels to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the SAA. Sewanee fell to 8-5 (2-2 SAA).
Prior to the match, Centre celebrated the careers of seniors
Emily Schank and
Peyton Baer.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre took the lead early in the first half with an easy shot on goal by
Savannah Elpers.
- After a multitude of offensive opportunities for both teams, the Colonels and Tigers were evenly matched as the remaining 28 minutes of the half were scoreless.
- Sewanee closed the gap on Ceara Caffrey's goal in the 50th minute, leveling the score at 1-1 on the only shot attempt of the day for the visitors.
- Getting down to the wire, the Colonels scored a pair of late goals to clinch the top seed in the upcoming SAA Tournament. Carter's clutch goal came on a
Peyton Baer assist following a penalty corner.

Sarah Biggs sealed the win with a goal in the 69th minute.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Elpers and Biggs each scored their team-best 16th goal of the season.
- The Colonels had 13 shots compared to Sewanee's one, putting seven of them on goal.
- Centre also recorded 20 penalty corner opportunities.
