Colonels win sixth straight with 6-0 shutout at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Centre field hockey team used a five-goal second half to break open a close game after the break and defeat the Eastern Mennonite Royals by a score of 6-0.

HIGHLIGHTS

- Reigning Southern Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week Sarah Biggs opened the scoring for the Colonels at the 14-minute mark on a rebound shot. Biggs's tally would be the only one of the half on either side as Centre outshot the Royals 17-1 in the opening period but could not put any more into the net.

- Early in the second half, Savannah Elpers gave the Colonels a 2-0 lead off an assist from Biggs. Just over six minutes later, Elpers and Biggs flipped the script, with Elpers assisting on Biggs's goal to put Centre up by three.

- Alana Pugh entered the scoring column for the first time this season with a little over 15 minutes to go, giving Centre a 4-0 lead with a blast from the left side.

- Rookie Megan Coomes recorded her first collegiate goal at the 57-minute mark off an assist from Kara Tipton, and then less than a minute later Coomes scored again to put the finishing touches on the shutout.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- The Colonels' depth was on full display in the Harrisonburg heat as they held the Royals to just one shot, none in the second half, seemingly improving as the game progressed. Centre outshot Eastern Mennonite 36-1 for the game.

- Elpers' goal in minute 40 gave her ten for the year, joining Biggs in double digits in the scoring column. Biggs scored her team high 11th and 12th goals of the season against the Royals.

- The victory over EMU was the second shutout for the Colonels during their current six-game winning streak. Centre has now outscored their last six opponents by a combined 39-7.
