Colonels suffer season’s first defeat against Hanover, 50-37

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Centre women's basketball sputtered offensively against Hanover Saturday evening, falling by a 50-37 score in their opener of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament at Hermann Court.

The Colonels (3-1) shot just 23 percent as a team while turning the ball over 19 times. Hanover (2-1) wasn't much sharper, shooting 27 percent with 16 turnovers, but did enough for its fifth consecutive win against Centre.

HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels struggled to find the bottom of the net right away, managing only four points on a 2-for-14 shooting effort in the first 10 minutes. Madison Rice's layup at the 3:38 mark was Centre's first bucket of the night.
- A Hanover 3-pointer late in the opening period gave the Panthers a 14-4 lead heading to the second quarter.
- Centre played Hanover even in the second, 9-9, as Kat Wilson scored four in the quarter for the Colonels.
- The box score from an up-and-down first half portrayed a defensive battle, as the two sides hit just 13 of a combined 61 tries.
- The Panthers warmed up some in the third quarter, outscoring the Colonels 18-9 to carry their biggest lead of the game into the final period, 41-22.
- That proved to be enough, despite the Colonels closing on a 15-9 stretch.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Although both sides had season-low shooting performances, the Panthers were plus-six from the free throw line and managed a 22-14 advantage in points in the paint.
- Hanover out-rebounded Centre 49-41, including 17 from Maleha Motter. Abigail Wehby led Centre with six boards.
- Marcum was the high scorer for Centre, tallying nine points on a 3-for-6 outing from long range.
