Colonels claim seventh SAA title, eighth consecutive NCAA berth

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's soccer continued its extraordinary conference reign by capturing the Southern Athletic Association Championship Tournament for the seventh season in a row, defeating Rhodes, 3-0, in Sunday's finale at Andrew P. Amend Field.

The fifth-ranked Colonels (19-0) remain the only team to ever hoist the SAA Women's Soccer Tournament trophy since the league's inception in 2012. Rhodes (9-5-3) has now finished as runners-up five times.

By virtue of the victory, the Colonels have ensured themselves a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth straight season.

Following the championship match, Averi Faulk, Cameron Zak and Alana Hughes were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Faulk garnering Tournament MVP honors.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Rhodes keeper Meghan Kiker made three saves in the first half on a handful of Centre chances, but the Colonels would score late in the period to take a 1-0 lead into the break. Madeleine Espy converted her fourth goal of the year on a pass from Rachael Boule.
- Rookie Cameron Zak doubled Centre's lead in the 49th minute when her boot into the box from midfield took a high bounce over Kiker's head. The fortunate score was Zak's fifth in as many matches and seventh overall this season.
- Centre orchestrated a gorgeous third goal to seal the victory. Alana Hughes's one-timer pass from the left wing found Gracie Fitzgerald, who headed the ball home in the 60th minute.
- The Colonels, who have not allowed a goal in 13 matches, would comfortably manage the three-goal margin to the finish line.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre finished with 18 shots (eight on goal) while limiting Rhodes to a single shot, which was saved by Sarah Stodghill late in the match.
- The Colonels had eight corner opportunities.
- Hughes, who set the SAA record with 13 assists last season, has 10 this year to go with 15 goals.
