Â
The Last Meeting
Centre 42, BSC 17 (11.11.18)
- The Colonels used a superior passing game to handily defeat Birmingham Southern in last season's Senior Day matchup at Farris Stadium.
Devin Hayes completed 14 of 21 passes for 298 yards and four scores, including a 77-yard strike to
Cody Estep.
- Hayes ended the first half and began the second half with touchdown passes to
Jordan Gunter and
Eric Niemann that put Centre in control of the game.
- Centre's defense held the BSC passing game to just 166 yards on 21 completions and also recorded five quarterback sacks.
- The lone Panther touchdown came courtesy of a 60-yard punt return by NCAA track champion Jamal Watkins late in the fourth quarter.
Â
Last Time Out
- Leading Sewanee 14-13 in the second quarter, Centre closed out the half with a flurry as
Tanner Young connected with
Mack Cox and
Cody Estep for touchdowns in the final minutes of the second quarter as Centre pulled away for a 49-20 victory on Senior Day.
-
Colin Burnam and
Trevor Carnell each ran for over 100 yards, with Burnam's 157 yards representing a season high. Burnam also had a career high three touchdowns on the ground and earned SAA Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance.
- Young completed 16 of 28 attempts for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
Jaylon Hibbs caught seven passes for 119 yards and a score (more below) for his sixth 100-yard game of the season.
Â
One More for the Record Book
- Wide receiver
Jaylon Hibbs set a Centre record for the second consecutive week. After establishing a new Centre single-game receiving yardage record the previous week against Millsaps, the Louisville St. Xavier product caught his 11th touchdown pass of the season against Sewanee for a new single-season record.
- Hibbs leads the SAA and ranks eighth in Division III with 1,064 receiving yards through the first nine games. He is also one of two players nationwide who has 50 or more catches while averaging 20 or more yards per catch.
Â
Scouting the Panthers
- Birmingham Southern enters its regular season finale with a 6-3 mark, doubling its win total from 2017 under second year head coach and former Centre offensive coordinator
Tony Joe White.
- The Panthers have won four of their last five games, with the lone loss coming to SAA champion Berry. BSC is most recently coming off a 34-17 victory at Millsaps that saw the Panthers nearly double up the Majors in rushing yards and force four turnovers.
- Quarterback Trevor Oakes currently ranks second in the SAA behind
Tanner Young in passing yards, while running back Zack Seay ranks second behind
Colin Burnam with ten rushing touchdowns.
- On defense, the Panthers have enjoyed solid seasons from defensive back Sy Butler and linebacker Garrett Stevens, who are two of the top three tacklers in the conference.
- Kicker/punter Ryder Andrews is the reigning SAA Special Teams Player of the Week after a solid all-around performance in the kicking game against Millsaps that included a 52-yard field goal.
- BSC ranks second in the SAA in total offense and third in scoring offense. The Panthers rank next to last in the league in total defense and last in pass defense.
