DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's basketball put together another impressive effort Saturday, defeating Sewanee 53-49 in the Southern Athletic Association opener inside Alumni Gymnasium.
The Colonels (5-1, 1-0 SAA) have held four consecutive opponents under 30 percent shooting from the field, limiting the visiting Tigers (5-5, 0-1) to just 17 of 59 overall.
Junior
Kat Wilson again led the squad offensively, netting 17 points on a 6-for-9 effort.
Abigail Stewart hauled in a career-high 12 rebounds, adding seven points and five blocks.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Sewanee hit the game's first bucket, but the Colonels would lead 15-6 after the opening quarter, getting contributions from six different scorers.
- A late flurry from the Tigers helped cut the halftime deficit to 27-20. Centre out-rebounded Sewanee 24-10 in the opening half.
- Wilson was key in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers by herself while lifting Centre back on top by double digit.
- Sewanee would battle back, and made it a two-point affair midway through the fourth quarter at 40-38.
- A late 7-0 spurt helped the Colonels put the game away.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Wilson set a season high with her 17 points, reaching 10+ for the fifth time this year.
- Stewart was a force in the paint, grabbing 12 rebounds – two offensive – while blocking five shots and adding an assist and steal.
- Centre finished with 16 bench points to Sewanee's four, led by
Presley Chirico's seven.
