FERRUM, Va. – Trailing by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter, Centre women's basketball nearly completed a comeback against Averett inside Swartz Gymnasium Monday afternoon, but the Cougars would hold on for a slim 66-64 victory.
Centre falls to 7-2 with the defeat, having its four-game winning streak snapped by Averett, which moves to 5-4 overall.
Kat Wilson and
Abigail Stewart each finished with 12 points to lead the Colonels, and
Abigail Wehby added 10.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Eight different Colonels scored in a back-and-forth opening quarter.
- Following Wilson's 3-pointer near the 3:27 mark, Averett closed the period on a 7-2 run to knot the game at 16-16.
- The Cougars' momentum carried into the second quarter, where they would outscore the Colonels 18-10.
- Up 34-26 at the half, Averett used a 6-0 run in the third quarter to take its biggest lead of the afternoon at 49-38.
- The margin was the same after a Carthon Brooke jumper to open the fourth quarter, as the Colonels stared at a 54-43 deficit.
- Centre slowly chipped away and would pull within three at 60-57 following
Mikayla Fee's layup at the 4:08 mark.
- Wilson drained a 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining, making it 63-61
- The score still 63-61 with 21 seconds left,
Cheyenne Bunner worked her way to the free throw line and hit one to pull within 63-62.
- The Cougars would hit their ensuing freebies, and Stewart answered with an offensive rebound and put-back.
- After two missed Averett free throws, the Colonels had a final possession, but turned the ball over to all but end their chances.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre went just 13 of 25 (52%) from the free throw line, including a 3-for-8 clip in the final five minutes of the game.
- The Colonels shot above 51% as a team overall, knocking down 24 of 47 overall. The Cougars looked similar, going 23 of 48.
- Bunner led the team with five rebounds, and Wehby and Stewart had four each. The Colonels out-rebounded Averett, 29-28.
- The Cougars got a huge performance from Brooke, who would finish with 23 points and nine rebounds.
