Centre’s stellar defense on display again in 57-36 victory

FERRUM, Va. – Centre women's basketball rebounded from a loss Monday to defeat Ferrum, 57-39, Tuesday afternoon in Swartz Gymnasium.

The Colonels (8-2) got back to their stingy ways on defense, holding their sixth opponent to 40 points or less and sub-30% shooting.

Centre lowers what was already the leading field goal defense in NCAA Division III entering the game (28.7%), as the Panthers (3-8) managed a 10-for-44 effort overall (22.7%).

HIGHLIGHTS
- Reigning Southern Athletic Association Player of the Week, Madison Marcum, drained a pair of early 3-pointers to give Centre an 11-4 lead midway through the opening period.
- She went on to score half of Centre's points after one quarter, with the Colonels on top, 18-11.
- Centre went on a 12-2 run to open the second period, putting Ferrum on its heels.
- The Colonels carried a 32-17 lead into the half, as Abigail Stewart and Cheyenne Bunner combined for 10 second-quarter points.
- The third and fourth quarters were more evenly matched, but the Panthers never truly threatened the Colonels.
- Centre's biggest lead was 24 points at 53-29 following Presley Chirico's traditional 3-point play with 5:31 left in the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Marcum finished with 12 points as 10 Colonels contributed on the scoreboard. Chirico and Ellen Hicks each set collegiate career-highs with nine points, and Stewart totaled eight.
- Hicks also set a personal best with a game-high 11 rebounds, helping Centre dominate Ferrum on the glass, 41-26.
- Abigail Wehby dished a season-best six assists, and as a team the Colonels assisted 12 of 18 field goals.
- Despite just one less turnover, Centre made the most of Ferrum's mistakes by holding a 17-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
- Along with the nation's best field goal percentage defense, the Colonels also boast the 12th toughest scoring defense, allowing just 46.7 points per game. They lowered that mark Tuesday by surrendering just 39 to the Panthers.
