Â
On TapÂ
- Centre opens its Southern Athletic Association (SAA) slate Saturday in Arkansas, taking on the Hendrix Warriors for a 2 p.m. ET kick at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.
Â
Series HistoryÂ
- Centre holds a slight 3-2 edge against Hendrix, including a 52-42 shootout victory last season in Danville.Â
- The Colonels are 1-1 in Conway, with a 35-26 win in 2014 and 35-28 loss in 2016.
Â
The Last MeetingÂ
Centre 52, Hendrix 42 (9.16.17)Â
- The Colonels started with a bang as
Cody Estep ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and Centre quickly climbed out to a 21-0 lead through one quarter.
- Hendrix would settle in, and its high-powered offense eventually helped trim the margin down to 42-36 early in the fourth quarter.
- Centre officially sealed the victory on
Tommy Kaczocha's 15-yard pick six later in the period, putting the game out of reach with only minutes left.
- The Colonels racked up 515 yards of offense, including 277 on the ground with a 6.9 yards-per-carry average. Centre's
Trevor Carnell (15 carries, 161 yards) and
Colin Burnam (15 carries, 109 yards) each crossed the goalline. Â
Â
Last Time OutÂ
- Centre overwhelmed Maryville by a
40-6 score last Saturday in Tennessee, excelling in all three phases of the game.
- The Scots scored a touchdown on their opening drive, but the ensuing PAT was blocked by
Andre Evans and returned 98 yards the other way by
John Wilson. Those two points were the first of a 37-point unanswered Centre run over the remainder of the game.
- Estep blocked his third kick of the season in the second quarter, and
Nate Johnson scooped it up and took it back for a touchdown, making it 19-6.
- Touchdown passes from
Tanner Young to
Jaylon Hibbs and
Mack Cox – the latter going for 98 yards – helped put the game away.
Â
Colonels of the Week
- The aforementioned Johnson was named SAA Special Teams Player of the Week, pairing his big touchdown return with a career-high seven tackles.
- Senior defensive tackle
Connor John earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week with career highs in tackles (7), tackles for loss (3) and sacks (2.5).
Â
Scouting the Warriors
 - Hendrix comes into Saturday's matchup with a record of 1-1. The Warriors defeated Lyon 37-27 in their season opener before losing 19-14 at Texas Lutheran last week.
- Hendrix quarterback Miles Thompson led all of Division III in total offense a season ago and ranked second in the nation in passing yardage.
-Â Â Kicker Sandy Burks has been an effective weapon for the Warriors this season, winning SAA Special Teams Player of the Week honors for Week 1 after kicking three field goals, including a school-record 44-yarder against Lyon.
- Defensive end Jared Bazley earned a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week after recording three sacks in Week 1.
Â
Next Week
- Next week the Colonels will be back at home for a big matchup as they will face the reigning SAA champion Berry Vikings.
- Centre is 3-2 all-time against Berry, but the Vikings have won the last two contests, including a 28-14 victory in Georgia last year that was the only loss of the season for the Colonels
- Berry's 21-19 victory over Centre in the 2016 regular season finale was the last home loss for the Colonels and denied Centre a conference championship.
- The matchup against Berry will be Centre's annual Goldout game, as Centre will be selling T-shirts with proceeds going to the Kids' Cancer Alliance.
