GRANVILLE, Ohio – Centre women's soccer won a battle of nationally-ranked programs Sunday on the road, defeating No. 21 Denison with clutch goals from
Elizabeth Nelson and
Alana Hughes.
The 18th-ranked Colonels improve to 5-0 in their first match away from home while sending the Big Red to 4-2.
HIGHLIGHTS
- After 45 minutes of action the two sides headed into the halftime break in a scoreless tie, although Centre out-shot Denison by a 9-4 margin. Denison's Patil Tcholakian had four saves.
- The Big Red seemed poised to take the victory with a Sam Haseltine goal in the 86th minute.
- With just 34 seconds on the clock, however, Centre freshman
Elizabeth Nelson scored off a rebound from
Meghan Paynter to force overtime. It marked the rookie's third goal of the season and second in as many matches.
- It was Hughes' goal in the final minutes of the first OT period that sealed the Colonel win, as she netted the game-winner off an assist from
Cameron Zak.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre finished with 25 shots to Denison's 10, with a 13-4 shot-on-goal advantage.
Brooke Smithson led all players with seven shots, followed by Hughes' six.

Sarah Stodghill moved to 4-0 between the pipes, earning three saves.
