DANVILLE, Ky. – The 17th-ranked Centre women's soccer squad handed regional foe Piedmont a 1-0 defeat Sunday at Andrew P. Amend Field under sloppy conditions, improving to 9-0 to continue their best start since 2012.
After a scoreless first half, the Colonels came back with a vengeance scoring the only goal of the game in the 51st minute. The visiting Lions, who drew level with the Colonels in a 0-0 tie last season, fall to 5-3-1 with the loss.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The two sides battled with the pouring rain in the first half, and although Centre out-shot Piedmont 8-2, neither team managed a goal in the opening 45 minutes.
-
Meghan Paynter, winning a battle for the ball in Centre's attacking third, slipped a pass past the Lions' center back and found
Alana Hughes, who hit back of the net for the game's lone goal early in the second half.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Colonels came determined to keep the winning streak going, outshooting the Lions 14-3 while allowing only two shots on goal compared to Centre's 10.
- Although not asked to be too active thanks to a solid back line, sophomore
Sarah Stodghill turned aside both Piedmont shots on target.
- Hughes' goal is her eighth of the season and seven in the last five matches. She leads the Southern Athletic Association in goals and is second in total points (16).
