DANVILLE, Ky. – A change of home venues and 90 minutes of combined lightning delays did not hinder the Centre men's soccer side against Berea Tuesday evening, as the Colonels won by a 3-0 margin at South Turf Field.
After a weekend full of rainy matches on the grass at Andrew P. Amend Field – and with more rain in the forecast – the Colonels (7-3) instead hosted the Mountaineers (2-6) on turf.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Following a delay to the original 7:30 p.m. ET start time, Centre opened the scoring in just the 10th minute.
Bailey Spade sent the ball deep to find
Will Newton, who slotted it past a gambling Berea keeper.
- Not long after, rookie
Nafiz Budeiri sent a rope off his right foot and found the back of the net, doubling the lead on his first career goal.
- The officials stopped play with just over 21 minutes left in the half as lightning in the area caused a delay lasting roughly 65 minutes.
- The Colonels took their 2-0 lead into the half once play resumed, but soon after the break made it 3-0 on a
Xavier Tomlin headed goal in the 48th minute. Newton provided the assist.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After edging the Mountaineers 8-5 in first-half shots, the Colonels dominated possession in the second period, finishing with a lopsided 16-0 shot advantage.
- Spade finished with two saves in his seventh shutout effort of the season.
- With three points in the win, Newton moves into a tie with
Alexander Garuba for the team lead with 11 points this season.
