DANVILLE, Ky. – Playing against the strong defensive squad of the Berry Vikings, the no. 15 Centre women's soccer team controlled possession and improved to 11-0 on the year as they defeated Berry by a score of 1-0.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre kept the ball on their offensive side of the field for much of the match and were extremely aggressive in the first half, outshooting the Vikings 11-0. Berry keeper Alyssa Stevens turned away every shot in her direction, including three saves in the final three minutes as the Colonels mounted a furious charge before halftime.
- The Colonels continued to put pressure on the Berry defense in the second half, finally cashing in at the 65-minute mark as freshman Cameron Zak put in a header in what turned out to be the only score of the contest.
- Berry's best chance at an equalizer came two minutes after Zak's goal but the shot by Vanessa Belanger sailed over the net. The Centre defense clamped down and did not allow another Vikings shot the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Alana Hughes was held without a goal for the first time since Sept. 9 at John Carroll, but she still had an impact on the outcome, assisting on Zak's header. Hughes led the team with seven shots, including three on goal. Zak and Meghan Paynter each finished with three shots.
- Centre outshot the Vikings 25-1 for the match, including 14-0 in shots on goal. Centre has now limited five of its 11 opponents and three of its last five to zero shots on goal. Jessie Turner played all 90 minutes on the back line and anchored a tenacious Centre defensive attack that swarmed the Vikings and dominated possession.
